<h2>Introduction</h2>
<p>As of early 2023, the global economic landscape continues to grapple with the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic and the accelerating pace of digital transformation. For vocational education and training (VET) systems, the primary objective has historically been the seamless transition of graduates into wage employment. However, recent shifts in labor market dynamics suggest that traditional employment pathways are no longer guaranteed (Maritz et al., 2020). The rise of the gig economy, the automation of technical tasks, and the increasing demand for individual agency have necessitated a re-evaluation of what it means to be a successful vocational graduate. Researchers have noted that while vocational graduates often find initial placement more readily than their general education counterparts, the long-term sustainability of these careers is frequently under threat (Torun & Tumen, 2017). Consequently, fostering an entrepreneurial mindset and self-employment capabilities has become a critical imperative for VET institutions worldwide.</p><p>Entrepreneurship is no longer seen merely as a last resort for those unable to find traditional jobs; it is increasingly recognized as a vital component of local and national development (Chankseliani et al., 2020). The ability to identify opportunities, mobilize resources, and manage risks—core components of the entrepreneurial mindset—provides a safety net and a path toward financial independence, particularly for marginalized or vulnerable populations (HOUSER et al., 1992). Despite this, many vocational programs remain tethered to archaic models of job-specific skill acquisition that do not account for the complexities of modern work design (Parker & Grote, 2019). This study aims to bridge the gap between vocational skill acquisition and self-employment intention by exploring the psychological and pedagogical determinants of entrepreneurial success among recent graduates.</p>
<h2>Literature Review</h2>
<h4>Employment Trends in Vocational Education</h4><p>Historically, the effectiveness of vocational education has been measured through employment rates and job-match efficiency. Research by Cherednichenko (2020) highlights that while college and vocational school graduates face different labor market outcomes, the vocational sector often provides a more direct entry point into the workforce. However, this entry is frequently into entry-level roles that may lack long-term satisfaction or career progression (Richards, 1984). In various contexts, such as South Korea, the determinants of employment for vocational graduates have shifted significantly over the past decade, reflecting broader economic changes (김지효, 2018). Furthermore, studies in China have identified specific problems in employment trends, noting that many graduates face a mismatch between their technical training and the actual demands of the industrial sector (Tan & Sheng, 2011).</p><h4>The Role of Entrepreneurial Mindsets and Self-Efficacy</h4><p>The transition from a passive job-seeker to a proactive self-employed individual requires more than technical proficiency. Entrepreneurial self-efficacy—the belief in one's ability to successfully perform the roles and tasks of an entrepreneur—is a fundamental driver of self-employment intentions (Abimbola Foluso OJAPINWA, 2020). Studies have consistently shown that high levels of self-efficacy significantly predict the intention of graduates to start their own businesses (Kisubi et al., 2021). This psychological capital is further bolstered by an entrepreneurial orientation, which acts as an intervening variable between motivation and intention (Jasintha, 2021). For graduates in technical fields, the requirement for marketing entrepreneurial competencies is particularly pronounced, as technical skill alone is insufficient to sustain a business (Muhammad, 2020).</p><h4>Pedagogical Influences on Entrepreneurship</h4><p>The method of instruction plays a pivotal role in shaping graduate outcomes. Traditional lecture-based models are increasingly viewed as inadequate for fostering entrepreneurial behavior. Instead, teaching and learning approaches that emphasize experiential learning and behavioral engagement are more effective at building entrepreneurial mindsets (Chengula et al., 2022; Cui & Bell, 2022). Furthermore, programs that integrate 'sandwich' degree models or industrial conversion programs have shown varying degrees of success in preparing graduates for the complexities of the work environment (Kiely & Ruhnke, 1998). In the context of the digital era, balancing these pedagogical approaches with digital literacy is essential, as digital competencies are now foundational to any entrepreneurial endeavor (Radovanović et al., 2020; Goulart et al., 2021).</p><h4>Self-Employment as an Alternative Career Path</h4><p>Self-employment offers a pathway to sustainable careers across the lifespan, particularly in volatile markets (Heijden et al., 2019). Programs designed to equip graduates with self-employment skills have existed for decades, yet their integration into standard VET curricula remains uneven (Unknown, 2002). For specific groups, such as those with hearing impairments or those in developing regions, realigning vocational skills for self-employment is not just an economic choice but a social necessity (Muwaniki & Muvirimi, 2018). In countries like Uzbekistan, state social work practice has begun to focus on ensuring vocational employment as a means of social stability (Abdurakhmanova et al., 2022). The overarching goal is to foster a sense of 'professional carer' for one's own career, moving beyond the frontiers of traditional employment (Robinson, 1991).</p>
<h2>Methodology</h2>
<p>This study utilized a cross-sectional quantitative design to investigate the relationships between vocational training, psychological capital, and self-employment intentions. The data collection occurred between August and December 2022, targeting graduates who had completed their vocational training within the previous 24 months. This timeframe was selected to capture the 'transition phase' where graduates are most actively navigating the labor market. A total of 450 valid responses were collected from graduates across three regions, ensuring a diverse representation of technical and trade-based disciplines.</p><h4>Instrumentation and Variables</h4><p>The survey instrument comprised four main sections: demographic information, entrepreneurial self-efficacy (ESE) scales, entrepreneurial orientation (EO) measures, and self-employment intention (SEI). ESE was measured using a validated 10-item scale assessing confidence in business planning, financial management, and leadership. EO was evaluated based on dimensions of proactiveness, risk-taking, and innovativeness. Self-employment intention was the primary dependent variable, measured using a 5-point Likert scale. Additionally, participants were asked to rate the relevance of their curriculum to self-employment skills, including marketing and digital literacy, drawing on frameworks suggested by Muhammad (2020) and Radovanović et al. (2020).</p><h4>Data Analysis</h4><p>Quantitative analysis was performed using SPSS v28. Descriptive statistics were utilized to summarize the sample characteristics. Multiple linear regression analysis was conducted to determine the predictors of self-employment intention. To account for potential differences between vocational disciplines, a one-way ANOVA was performed. Following the approach of Lin (2014), employment data mining techniques were conceptually applied to identify patterns in graduate career trajectories, though the primary analysis remained grounded in inferential statistics. We also considered the impact of psychological capital and perceived employability as mediating factors (Baluku et al., 2020; Batistič & Tymon, 2017).</p>
<h2>Results</h2>
<h4>Sample Characteristics</h4><p>The demographics of the study participants reflect a broad spectrum of the vocational graduate population. Demographic and Employment Profile of Respondents.</figcaption></figure><h4>Predictors of Self-Employment Intention</h4><p>To understand what drives graduates toward self-employment, a multiple regression analysis was performed. The model included entrepreneurial self-efficacy, entrepreneurial orientation, and perceived curriculum relevance as independent variables. The results, summarized in Table 2, demonstrate that both self-efficacy and orientation are strong predictors of intention (p < .001). Perceived curriculum relevance was also a significant factor, supporting the findings of Chengula et al. Comparison of Career Perceptions between Wage-Employed and Self-Employment-Oriented Graduates.</figcaption></figure><h4>Pathways to Entrepreneurship</h4><p>The analysis reveals a multi-staged path where networking behavior acts as a catalyst for self-employment intention (Batistič & Tymon, 2017). Graduates who engaged in professional networking during their vocational training were 1.5 times more likely to express an interest in self-employment than those who did not. <h2>Discussion</h2>
<p>The results of this study underscore a significant shift in the vocational landscape. As we navigate the complexities of 2023, it is evident that the traditional pipeline from vocational school to factory or office is no longer the sole metric of success (Torun & Tumen, 2017). Our finding that entrepreneurial self-efficacy and orientation are primary drivers of self-employment intention aligns with previous research highlighting the importance of psychological capital in career outcomes (Kisubi et al., 2021; Baluku et al., 2020). However, the critical contribution of this study lies in identifying the disconnect between technical training and the 'agency' required to thrive in a digital, gig-oriented economy.</p><h4>The Pedagogical Gap</h4><p>One of the most striking findings is the impact of curriculum relevance. While technical skills remain the foundation of VET, the lack of marketing entrepreneurial competencies and digital literacy hinders graduates from translating these skills into viable businesses (Muhammad, 2020; Radovanović et al., 2020). The success of 'sandwich' or conversion programs mentioned in literature (Kiely & Ruhnke, 1998) suggests that integrated, real-world experiences are necessary to bridge this gap. Our data supports the call for a shift toward 'behavioral' entrepreneurial education, where students are not just taught <em>about</em> entrepreneurship but are encouraged to <em>act</em> entrepreneurially (Cui & Bell, 2022).</p><h4>Automation and Work Design</h4><p>The influence of digital transformation cannot be overstated. As Parker and Grote (2019) argue, the digital world changes why work design matters. For vocational graduates, this means that the jobs they were trained for may look very different or even be automated in the near future. Self-employment provides a mechanism for graduates to reclaim agency by designing their own work roles. This is particularly relevant in the post-COVID era, where entrepreneurship has emerged as an 'unsung hero' of economic resilience (Maritz et al., 2020). By fostering a mindset of sustainable careers (Heijden et al., 2019), VET institutions can help graduates navigate these shifts.</p><h4>Implications for Policy and Practice</h4><p>Policy-makers must recognize that employment status is no longer a binary of 'employed' or 'unemployed.' The reality for many vocational graduates involves a mix of part-time wage work, freelance projects, and self-employment (황여정 & 백병부, 2008). Supporting this 'hybrid' career path requires a realignment of VET goals (Muwaniki & Muvirimi, 2018). Furthermore, social capital and networking behavior must be integrated into the vocational curriculum to provide graduates with the social resources necessary for entrepreneurial success (Batistič & Tymon, 2017). This is especially critical in emerging economies where state support for formal employment may be limited (Abdurakhmanova et al., 2022; OJAPINWA, 2020).</p>
<h2>Conclusion</h2>
<p>This study has demonstrated that fostering entrepreneurial mindsets and self-employment capabilities is essential for the modern vocational graduate. In the context of early 2023, the vulnerability of traditional employment models necessitates a broader definition of 'employability'—one that includes the capacity for independent economic agency. Our findings indicate that psychological factors such as self-efficacy and entrepreneurial orientation, when supported by behavioral pedagogical approaches and digital literacy, significantly enhance self-employment intentions.</p><p>To move beyond mere employment, VET institutions must transition from job-training centers to hubs of entrepreneurial innovation. This requires curriculum reform that prioritizes soft skills, marketing, and networking alongside traditional technical training. Policy-makers should support this transition through targeted funding for entrepreneurship-focused vocational programs and by creating institutional frameworks that support young self-employed technicians. Future research should focus on longitudinal studies to track the actual success rates and long-term sustainability of vocational entrepreneurs, particularly in the face of ongoing digital and economic shifts. By empowering graduates to become 'professional carers' of their own career paths, the vocational sector can continue to serve as a cornerstone of socio-economic stability and progress.</p>
