This study aimed to determine the effect of Body Mass Index (BMI) on ovarian response and pregnancy outcome in women undergoing in-vitro fertilization (IVF) at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH). Women undergoing IVF at UBTH between January 2017 and December 2021 were recruited for this retrospective cohort study. The patients were divided into four groups based on BMI: underweight (<18.5kg/m2), normal weight (18.5-24.9kg/m2), overweight (25-29.9kg/m2), and obese (≥30kg/m2). The primary outcome measures were ovarian response, oocyte yield, fertilization rate, and clinical pregnancy rate. A total of 30 women were included in the study, with 5 (16.7%) underweight, 10 (33.3%) normal weight, 8 (26.7%) overweight, and 7 (23.3%) obese. The mean age of the participants was 34.6 ± 4.8 years. There were no statistically significant differences in ovarian response, oocyte yield, fertilization rate, and clinical pregnancy rate across the different BMI groups (p>0.05). However, there was a trend towards a lower clinical pregnancy rate in the obese group (14.3%) compared to the normal weight group (40%). This study suggests that BMI does not significantly impact ovarian response or pregnancy outcome in women undergoing IVF at UBTH. However, a larger study with a more diverse population is needed to confirm these findings and investigate the potential impact of obesity on IVF outcomes.
