<h2>Introduction</h2><p>Digital transformation (DT) refers to the integration of digital technologies into all areas of business, fundamentally changing how organizations operate and deliver value to customers (Vial, 2019). In the contemporary business environment, DT has emerged as a critical driver of operational efficiency, enabling firms to streamline processes, reduce costs, and enhance decision-making (Fitzgerald et al., 2014). While large corporations have extensively adopted digital technologies, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) often lag due to limited financial resources, lack of technical expertise, and resistance to change (OECD, 2021). Nevertheless, SMEs constitute the backbone of most economies, accounting for over 90% of businesses and providing 60-70% of employment globally (World Bank, 2020). Therefore, understanding how SMEs can effectively leverage digital transformation to improve operational efficiency is of paramount importance.</p><p>Operational efficiency, defined as the ratio of output to input in production processes, is a key performance indicator for organizational success (Mouzas, 2006). Digital technologies such as cloud computing, big data analytics, and the Internet of Things (IoT) have the potential to significantly enhance operational efficiency by automating routine tasks, enabling real-time monitoring, and facilitating data-driven decision-making (Bharadwaj et al., 2013). However, the mere adoption of technology does not guarantee efficiency gains; organizational capabilities such as employee digital literacy and agility play crucial roles in translating digital investments into performance outcomes (Teece, 2018).</p><p>Despite the growing body of literature on digital transformation, most studies focus on large enterprises, leaving a gap in understanding the specific dynamics within SMEs (Eller et al., 2020). Moreover, existing research often employs either quantitative or qualitative approaches, rarely integrating both to capture the complexity of the phenomenon (Nwankpa & Roumani, 2016). This study addresses these gaps by employing a mixed-methods design to investigate the relationship between digital transformation and operational efficiency in SMEs, with a focus on the mediating roles of employee digital literacy and organizational agility.</p><p>The research questions guiding this study are: (1) To what extent does digital transformation affect operational efficiency in SMEs? (2) Do employee digital literacy and organizational agility mediate this relationship? (3) What contextual factors influence the effectiveness of digital transformation initiatives in SMEs? By answering these questions, the study aims to provide a comprehensive framework that can guide SME managers and policymakers in optimizing digital transformation efforts.</p><h2>Methods</h2><h3>Research Design</h3><p>This study employed a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design, consisting of two phases: a quantitative survey followed by qualitative interviews (Creswell & Plano Clark, 2017). The quantitative phase aimed to test the hypothesized relationships among digital transformation, employee digital literacy, organizational agility, and operational efficiency. The qualitative phase sought to explain and contextualize the quantitative findings by exploring participants' experiences and perceptions.</p><h3>Sample and Data Collection</h3><p>The target population comprised SMEs (defined as enterprises with fewer than 250 employees) operating in manufacturing, retail, and professional services sectors in Spain, Ireland, Pakistan, and China. A stratified random sampling method was used to ensure representation across sectors and countries. An online survey was distributed to 1,000 SME owners and managers, yielding 312 complete responses (response rate = 31.2%). The sample included 58% male and 42% female respondents, with an average firm size of 45 employees and an average firm age of 12 years.</p><p>For the qualitative phase, 20 participants were purposively selected from survey respondents who indicated willingness to be interviewed. The interviews were semi-structured, lasting 45-60 minutes, and were conducted via video conferencing. Questions explored participants' experiences with digital transformation, challenges encountered, and perceived impacts on operational efficiency. All interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim.</p><h3>Measures</h3><p>All constructs were measured using validated scales adapted from prior literature. Digital transformation was assessed using a 7-item scale developed by Westerman et al. (2014), measuring the extent of digital technology adoption and integration. Employee digital literacy was measured using a 5-item scale adapted from van Laar et al. (2017), capturing employees' abilities to use digital tools effectively. Organizational agility was measured using a 6-item scale from Tallon and Pinsonneault (2011), assessing the firm's ability to respond quickly to market changes. Operational efficiency was measured using a 5-item scale based on Mouzas (2006), evaluating process improvements, cost reductions, and productivity gains. All items were rated on a 5-point Likert scale (1 = strongly disagree, 5 = strongly agree).</p><h3>Data Analysis</h3><p>Quantitative data were analyzed using SPSS 26 and AMOS 24. Descriptive statistics and correlation analyses were conducted first. Then, structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to test the hypothesized relationships, including direct and indirect effects. Model fit was assessed using chi-square/df ratio, CFI, TLI, and RMSEA. Bootstrapping with 5,000 resamples was used to test the significance of indirect effects.</p><p>Qualitative data were analyzed using thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006). Transcripts were coded inductively, and themes were developed iteratively. Two researchers independently coded the data, and discrepancies were resolved through discussion. The qualitative findings were then integrated with the quantitative results to provide a holistic understanding.</p><h2>Results</h2><h3>Quantitative Findings</h3><p>Descriptive statistics indicated that the mean scores for digital transformation, employee digital literacy, organizational agility, and operational efficiency were 3.42 (SD = 0.78), 3.65 (SD = 0.71), 3.58 (SD = 0.69), and 3.71 (SD = 0.74), respectively. Correlation analysis revealed significant positive correlations among all variables (p < 0.01).</p><p>The structural equation model demonstrated good fit: χ²/df = 2.15, CFI = 0.94, TLI = 0.92, RMSEA = 0.06. The results showed a significant positive direct effect of digital transformation on operational efficiency (β = 0.42, p < 0.001). Additionally, digital transformation had significant positive effects on employee digital literacy (β = 0.51, p < 0.001) and organizational agility (β = 0.47, p < 0.001). In turn, both employee digital literacy (β = 0.28, p < 0.001) and organizational agility (β = 0.33, p < 0.001) significantly predicted operational efficiency. The indirect effects of digital transformation on operational efficiency through employee digital literacy (β = 0.14, p < 0.01) and organizational agility (β = 0.16, p < 0.01) were both significant, indicating partial mediation. The model explained 58% of the variance in operational efficiency.</p><h3>Qualitative Findings</h3><p>Thematic analysis of interview data revealed four main themes: (1) Leadership and Vision, (2) Resource Constraints, (3) Employee Engagement and Training, and (4) Industry-Specific Pressures.</p><p>Leadership and Vision: Participants emphasized that successful digital transformation requires strong leadership commitment and a clear digital vision. One manager stated, "Our CEO was the driving force; without his vision, we would have been lost." Leaders who actively championed digital initiatives and allocated resources were more likely to see efficiency gains.</p><p>Resource Constraints: Financial limitations were frequently cited as a major barrier. A small manufacturer noted, "We wanted to implement an ERP system, but the cost was prohibitive for our size." Participants also mentioned lack of time and expertise as constraints, leading to ad-hoc technology adoption.</p><p>Employee Engagement and Training: The importance of employee buy-in and training was a recurring theme. A retail owner said, "We invested in training, and it paid off; our staff became more confident and efficient." Conversely, resistance to change was a challenge when training was insufficient.</p><p>Industry-Specific Pressures: Participants in manufacturing highlighted the need for automation to remain competitive, while those in services emphasized customer-facing digital tools. These pressures influenced the pace and focus of digital transformation efforts.</p><h2>Discussion</h2><p>The findings confirm that digital transformation positively influences operational efficiency in SMEs, aligning with prior research (Fitzgerald et al., 2014; Vial, 2019). However, the mediation analysis reveals that the effect is partially transmitted through employee digital literacy and organizational agility, underscoring the importance of human and organizational capabilities. This is consistent with the dynamic capabilities view, which posits that firms must develop internal capabilities to leverage external technologies effectively (Teece, 2018).</p><p>The qualitative findings provide rich contextual explanations. Leadership emerged as a critical enabler, corroborating studies that highlight top management support as a key success factor (Westerman et al., 2014). Resource constraints, particularly financial, remain significant hurdles for SMEs, echoing the digital divide between large and small firms (OECD, 2021). Employee training and engagement were seen as essential to overcome resistance and maximize the benefits of digital tools, supporting the notion that digital literacy is a foundational capability (van Laar et al., 2017).</p><p>The study contributes to theory by proposing an integrated model that combines technological, human, and organizational dimensions. It extends the literature on digital transformation in SMEs, which has been relatively underexplored (Eller et al., 2020). Practically, the findings suggest that SME managers should not only invest in technology but also prioritize upskilling employees and fostering an agile culture. Policymakers could design support programs that address financial barriers and provide training resources.</p><p>However, the study has limitations. The cross-sectional design precludes causal inferences, and the reliance on self-reported measures may introduce common method bias. The sample, while diverse, may not be fully representative of all SMEs globally. Future research could employ longitudinal designs to examine the dynamic process of digital transformation and its long-term effects on efficiency. Additionally, exploring moderating factors such as industry type and firm size could yield more nuanced insights.</p><h2>Conclusion</h2><p>This mixed-methods study provides robust evidence that digital transformation enhances operational efficiency in SMEs, with employee digital literacy and organizational agility acting as partial mediators. The findings highlight the need for a holistic approach that integrates technology adoption with human capital development and organizational flexibility. For SME managers, the practical implications are clear: invest in training, foster a culture of agility, and secure leadership commitment. For policymakers, the results underscore the importance of providing financial and technical support to help SMEs overcome barriers.
