<h2>Introduction</h2><p>The rapid advancement of digital technologies has fundamentally altered the business landscape, compelling organizations across all sectors to reconsider their operational strategies. Digital transformation, defined as the integration of digital technologies into all areas of business, fundamentally changing how organizations operate and deliver value to customers (Vial, 2019), has emerged as a critical driver of competitive advantage. While large corporations have extensively leveraged digital tools to streamline operations, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) often lag in adoption due to resource constraints and limited technical expertise (Eller et al., 2020).</p><p>SMEs constitute the backbone of most economies, accounting for over 90% of businesses and providing approximately 60-70% of employment globally (World Bank, 2020). Their operational efficiency directly influences economic growth and job creation. However, SMEs face unique challenges in digital transformation, including financial limitations, lack of skilled personnel, and organizational inertia (Moeuf et al., 2018). Understanding the impact of digital transformation on operational efficiency in this context is therefore of paramount importance for both academic research and practical policy formulation.</p><p>Previous studies have examined the relationship between digital transformation and firm performance, but findings remain inconclusive. Some research indicates significant positive effects on productivity and profitability (Fitzgerald et al., 2014), while others highlight the complexity and potential negative outcomes if implementation is poorly managed (Westerman et al., 2014). Moreover, most empirical studies focus on large enterprises, leaving a gap in understanding the SME context. This study addresses this gap by investigating the following research questions: (1) To what extent does digital transformation affect operational efficiency in SMEs? (2) What role does organizational readiness play in this relationship? (3) What are the key barriers and enablers of digital transformation in SMEs?</p><p>This research employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative survey data with qualitative interviews, to provide a comprehensive understanding of the phenomenon. The study contributes to the literature by offering empirical evidence from a diverse sample of SMEs and by integrating both statistical and contextual insights. The findings have practical implications for SME managers, technology providers, and policymakers seeking to promote digital adoption.</p><h2>Methods</h2><h3>Research Design</h3><p>A sequential explanatory mixed-methods design was adopted, consisting of two phases. Phase 1 involved a quantitative survey to test hypotheses regarding the relationships among digital transformation, organizational readiness, and operational efficiency. Phase 2 comprised qualitative interviews to explain and elaborate on the quantitative findings, providing depth and context.</p><h3>Sample and Data Collection</h3><p>The target population consisted of SMEs (defined as enterprises with fewer than 250 employees) operating in manufacturing, retail, and service sectors in the United Kingdom. A stratified random sampling technique was employed to ensure representation across sectors and firm sizes. An online questionnaire was distributed via email and professional networks, yielding 312 valid responses (response rate of 34%). The sample included 112 manufacturing firms, 98 retail firms, and 102 service firms. The majority of respondents were owners or senior managers (78%).</p><p>For the qualitative phase, 25 semi-structured interviews were conducted with SME managers who had participated in the survey and indicated willingness to be interviewed. Interviewees were selected using purposive sampling to achieve maximum variation in terms of sector, size, and digital transformation maturity. Each interview lasted 45-60 minutes and was audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim.</p><h3>Measures</h3><p>Digital transformation was measured using a 12-item scale adapted from Westerman et al. (2014), assessing the extent of digital technology adoption in operations, customer engagement, and business processes. Operational efficiency was measured using a 10-item scale based on performance indicators such as cycle time, cost reduction, and resource utilization (Ray et al., 2004). Organizational readiness was assessed using a 9-item scale capturing technological, financial, and human resource readiness (Parasuraman, 2000). All items were rated on a 5-point Likert scale (1 = strongly disagree, 5 = strongly agree).</p><p>Control variables included firm size (number of employees), firm age, and industry sector. The questionnaire was pilot-tested with 15 SME managers to ensure clarity and relevance, and minor adjustments were made based on feedback.</p><h3>Data Analysis</h3><p>Quantitative data were analyzed using SPSS version 26 and AMOS version 26. Descriptive statistics were computed, followed by confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) to assess the validity and reliability of the measurement model. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was employed to test the hypothesized relationships. Moderation analysis was conducted using the interaction term approach. The significance level was set at p < 0.05.</p><p>Qualitative data were analyzed using thematic analysis following Braun and Clarke's (2006) six-phase framework. Transcripts were coded inductively, and themes were developed iteratively. To ensure trustworthiness, member checking and peer debriefing were employed.</p><h2>Results</h2><h3>Quantitative Findings</h3><p>The measurement model demonstrated good fit (χ²/df = 2.34, CFI = 0.95, TLI = 0.94, RMSEA = 0.06). All constructs exhibited satisfactory reliability (Cronbach's alpha > 0.80) and convergent validity (average variance extracted > 0.50). Discriminant validity was confirmed as the square root of AVE for each construct exceeded the inter-construct correlations.</p><p>Descriptive statistics revealed moderate levels of digital transformation (mean = 3.12, SD = 0.78) and operational efficiency (mean = 3.45, SD = 0.82). Organizational readiness had a mean of 3.28 (SD = 0.75). Correlation analysis indicated significant positive associations among all three variables.</p><p>Structural equation modeling results showed that digital transformation had a significant positive effect on operational efficiency (β = 0.42, p < 0.001), supporting Hypothesis 1. Organizational readiness significantly moderated this relationship (β = 0.18, p < 0.01), indicating that the effect of digital transformation on efficiency was stronger for firms with higher readiness. The model explained 38% of the variance in operational efficiency.</p><p>Control variables: firm size had a small but significant positive effect on operational efficiency (β = 0.12, p < 0.05), while firm age and industry sector were not significant.</p><h3>Qualitative Findings</h3><p>Thematic analysis of interview data revealed four main themes: (1) Drivers of digital transformation, (2) Barriers to implementation, (3) Enablers of successful adoption, and (4) Perceived impact on operational efficiency.</p><p><strong>Drivers:</strong> Participants cited competitive pressure, customer expectations, and cost reduction as primary motivations for digital transformation. One manufacturing manager noted, "We had to automate our inventory management because our competitors were delivering faster."</p><p><strong>Barriers:</strong> Financial constraints were the most frequently mentioned barrier, followed by lack of digital skills and resistance to change. A retail owner stated, "The initial investment is huge, and we don't have the IT staff to maintain the systems."</p><p><strong>Enablers:</strong> Leadership commitment and incremental implementation were highlighted as critical. A service firm manager explained, "Our CEO championed the digital initiative and we phased the rollout, which helped employees adapt."</p><p><strong>Impact:</strong> Most participants reported improvements in process speed, accuracy, and cost savings. However, some noted that benefits took time to materialize and required continuous adjustment.</p><h2>Discussion</h2><p>The findings confirm that digital transformation positively influences operational efficiency in SMEs, aligning with prior research (Fitzgerald et al., 2014; Moeuf et al., 2018). The effect size (β = 0.42) is substantial, indicating that SMEs can achieve meaningful efficiency gains through digital adoption. This supports the notion that digital technologies enable process optimization, data-driven decision-making, and enhanced resource allocation (Vial, 2019).</p><p>The moderating role of organizational readiness underscores the importance of preparation before embarking on digital initiatives. Firms with higher readiness—characterized by adequate technological infrastructure, financial resources, and skilled personnel—are better positioned to leverage digital tools effectively. This finding extends the technology-organization-environment framework (Tornatzky & Fleischer, 1990) by highlighting readiness as a critical contingency factor.</p><p>Qualitative insights reveal that barriers such as financial constraints and skill shortages are prevalent in SMEs, consistent with previous studies (Eller et al., 2020). However, the presence of leadership support and phased implementation can mitigate these challenges. This suggests that SME managers should focus on building internal capabilities and fostering a culture of innovation to facilitate successful digital transformation.</p><p>The study has several limitations. The cross-sectional design limits causal inference, and the reliance on self-reported measures may introduce common method bias. Future research could employ longitudinal designs and objective performance data. Additionally, the sample was drawn from the UK, limiting generalizability to other contexts.</p><p>Despite these limitations, the study makes significant contributions. It provides empirical evidence on the digital transformation-efficiency link in SMEs, a context often overlooked. The mixed-methods approach offers a holistic understanding, combining statistical rigor with contextual depth. Practically, the findings suggest that policymakers should design support programs that address financial and skill barriers, while managers should prioritize readiness-building activities.</p><h2>Conclusion</h2><p>This study evaluated the impact of digital transformation on operational efficiency in SMEs using a mixed-methods design. The quantitative results demonstrate a significant positive relationship, moderated by organizational readiness. Qualitative findings illuminate the drivers, barriers, and enablers of digital adoption. The research underscores the importance of strategic planning and capability development for SMEs to realize the benefits of digital transformation.
