About this journal
Aims The International Journal of Political Ecology (IJPEC) provides a critical interdisciplinary forum for scholarship that analyzes the dynamic relationships between political structures, economic systems, and ecological change. The journal aims to advance theoretical and empirical understandings of environmental justice, resource governance, and sustainability by connecting diverse approaches from political science, human geography, sociology, anthropology, environmental studies, and related fields. IJPEC prioritizes research that interrogates power asymmetries, social inequalities, and historical legacies of colonialism and capitalism in shaping environmental outcomes. We seek to bridge scholarly rigor with real-world relevance, fostering dialogue among academics, policymakers, activists, and practitioners committed to confronting ecological crises and building more just and sustainable futures. Scope IJPEC publishes high-quality, original research that addresses the intersections of politics, economy, and ecology. The journal welcomes contributions from all regions and epistemologies, with a particular emphasis on underrepresented perspectives. Key topical areas include, but are not limited to: • Political economy of natural resources (extractive industries, energy transitions, fisheries, forests) • Environmental justice movements and climate justice theory and practice • Governance of global commons, including climate, oceans, and biodiversity • Land, water, and food sovereignty in the context of agrarian change and green grabbing • Green capitalism, market environmentalism, degrowth, and post-growth alternatives • Ecologies of conflict, militarism, displacement, and environmental peacebuilding • Multispecies justice and more-than-human political ecologies • Urban political ecology, infrastructure, and socio-ecological metabolisms • Feminist political ecology, gender, and intersectional approaches • Environmental racism, settler colonialism, and decolonial ecologies Article Types The journal accepts the following peer-reviewed contributions: • Original research articles (8,000–12,000 words) • Review articles and meta-analyses • Special issues (proposals and individual papers) • Commentaries and critical debates (up to 5,000 words) • Book reviews (1,500–3,000 words) • Field notes and practice-based reflections (3,000–5,000 words) Audience IJPEC serves an international and interdisciplinary audience of scholars, researchers, and students in the social sciences and humanities engaged with environmental and political issues. It is also intended for policymakers working at the intersection of environment and development, environmental justice activists, and practitioners in non-governmental organizations and social movements. The journal aims to make its content accessible to a broad readership while maintaining rigorous scholarly standards.
