The length and volume of the article i.e. How long the paper has to be e.g. pages, number of words, the type of citation style preferred in the article, types of sources that are allowed e.g. websites, books and articles, other formatting details such as line-spacing, footnotes, subtitles and heading. Also, set a schedule and ascertain how long it will take you to complete each task.

Find a Topic and Question

Once you have figured out what the research is about, the next step is to choose a specific topic or question to research. Some factors to put into consideration when choosing a topic are:

Appropriateness: Is the topic appropriate? At this point, you might want to have a professor or an authority in that field approve it.

Focus: Try to narrow the focus of your paper which also involves making it as specific as possible.

Relevance: It is important that you choose a topic that not only interests you but will also be relevant and interesting to the reader.

Try to put information in your own words. Paraphrasing the information in your own words is helpful while taking notes to avoid plagiarism. In a situation where you do take quotes directly from the source, ensure that you take note of it. It is also important to make notes about specific conclusions drawn from the material. Background information is always necessary, therefore, look for specific details that support your thesis or question.

Construct an Outline
